Domain Name Registrar Transfer
Domain name registrar transfer is a tricky area in which
Excellone Web Solutions Development Company, India renders expert service
about details like gaining registrar and losing registrar and initiating
registrar transfer well before expiry date.
Sometimes, the registrant desires a domain name registrar
transfer. This is nothing but a change of registrars. This is possible,
only if one has adhered to the procedure while registering the domain
name. This varies from one ICANN registrar to another. As a general rule,
it is always best to have one's own name listed as the admin contact.
With many registrars, the admin contact or rather the person receiving
the e-mail of the admin contact, is the "de facto" owner of the domain
name. Even if one is not listed as the admin contact, he may be able to
transfer to a different registrar. But in that case one will need to be
listed as the domain registrant, and use a signed fax to authorize the
transfer request.
One has to co-ordinate with both the gaining registrar and
losing registrar. If in any doubt, contact the registrar's support department
before initiating a transfer request. The losing registrar must not charge
unnecessarily. Some registrars may choose to refuse the transfer, for
instance, if the name has been registered free of charge using a special
offer. It is an increasing trend in the domain industry, particularly
from the expensive registrars, which are losing out. They are doing everything
possible to make transferring names out of their system as difficult as
possible in order to protect their market share.
The domain transfer to a new registrar is possible right
up to the expiry date. It is very important that the transfer is initiated
well before expiry date. However, more often than not, the customer support
of the largest domain registrar will claim that domain name registrar
transfer is not possible in the last 30 days of the current registration
period. Yet another thing is that a few ICANN registrars have operated
a decidedly shady practice. What they do is this: when a name is registered
with them for multiple years, what they actually did was just pay the
registry for the first year. But in the WHOIS data, which they control,
they show the name as being registered for the full term. Nobody is any
the wiser, until a transfer is initiated. When a domain name registrar
transfer occurs, the registry adds a year to the real end registration
date and the name is transferred to the gaining registrar. But the unfortunate
part is that since the registry or the gaining registrar have no idea
that the losing registrar was manipulating the WHOIS data, the resulting
expiry date can be one or more years prior to the original expiry date.
In this case, a complaint must be registered against the
losing registrar and the ICANN. Most domain hijacking is carried out using
the domain transfer system. Domain hijackers attempt to locate gaining
registrars that have relatively weak security checks when validating incoming
transfer requests. And if one's name gets transferred away to a different
registrar by a hijacker, they are in total control. Getting the DNS updated
makes the "transfer" of hosts also possible; i.e. get the name hosted
by your web hosting company.

Gaining registrars and losing registrars
Domain name registrar transfer is possible if one has originally
registered with a reputed ICANN registrar. On complying with their registrar
transfer formalities; the domain can be transferred to a new registrar.
However, shady registrars, who resort to all sorts of hocus-pocus to hoodwink
few of his valuable dollars, in addition to the loss of precious website
uptime. Please ensure the following for smooth domain name registrar transfer:
- Please select a reputed ICANN registrar to register the domain in
the first place.
- While registering, enlist one's own name as the admin contact and
not any other name.
- Ensure that the registration with the Registrar was not done under
any special offer or for free.
- Ensure that the registrar has paid the full term fees to the registry.
- Initiate registrar transfer requests well before the expiry term.
These steps, if adhered to, should eliminate all hurdles,
while requesting for transfer of domain to a new registrar. The concepts
of the gaining and losing registrars must be understood clearly. It is
quite apparent that most of the difficulties that arise in any domain
name registrar transfer requests are due to the careless approach of the
domain registrant. Lack of proper care in choosing the registrar, proving
false admin contact information during domain registration, failure to
follow up domain renewals resulting in expiry of domain name registration,
etc lead to complications, litigations and legal battles for domain names
with the registrars. These conflicts not only erode one's time and money,
but also leave a telling impact on the credibility of the registrars.
Domain name registrar transfer is possible only if the registrant
has complied with all the formalities and procedures. It is the duty of
the registrant to take up with the ICANN, any case of a registrar taking
undue advantage of the casualness or ignorance of the registrant, which
would prevent recurrence of such instances in the future. By such awareness
and spontaneous corrective action, domain hijackings, proxy registration
services and deficient domain registration services can be prevented and
totally eliminated in the course of time. This explains the need of discussing
each and every aspect of domain registration, thereby ensuring proper
and prudent registrar selection and correct domain registration.
It would be foolish to register a domain name without inquiring
about the credentials and the standing of the registrar. The domain name
registrar transfer is definitely possible with ease if all the basic formalities
of the ICANN registrar have been complied with.
