Web designer- who makes a difference
A web designer, who can create websites design with simplicity,
as its hallmark, combining good aesthetics and utility values in the right
proportion, will be the web designer who makes a difference. The web world
one can find web designers who claim to be nothing less than the very
best in the business. But what makes a web designer truly stand out from
the crowd? Is it technical expertise, a creative urge or experience? All
these factors do play a major role in making a web designer truly exceptional,
but just these are insufficient. A web designer, who has
- the intuitive urge to create a website with simplicity as its hall
mark,
- the common sense to grasp the specialized needs of every customer
and
- the vision to combine good aesthetics and utility values in the right
proportion,
will meet the criteria of being reputed as the web designer
who makes a difference. In order to develop a dynamic website, a web
designer with all the above mentioned qualities would focus on certain
specific things namely:
- Attracting potential customers to one's website,
- Being able to convert them from being one time visitors into constant
clients and
- Obtaining referral contacts of their friends, family and associates.
A constant awareness of this marketing reality, would go
a long way in building a great website and a great web designer. Every
single resource must be utilized to study and learn what it takes to get
people to visit one's website. The competitor websites must be visited
and visitors surveyed at regular intervals.

Website design: need for creativity
Usually it takes a prospective customer an average of 5 visits
to a website before he makes an attempt to contact the website owner.
In the example of a marketing website, it is of high importance as to
whether the exceptionally talented web designer has incorporated the necessary
tools and links in creating an ecommerce website, or not.
Automatic or semi-automatic follow up, auto responders, downloadable
information that they can access and contact management software are factors,
which affect one's reputation as a web designer. It must be borne in mind
that all referrals are prospective customers. Referrals are pre-qualified
in that they already want what one has to offer.
Similarly a great web designer has to definitely worry about
the quick loading capabilities of the website, easy navigability etc.
Images, no doubt, enhance the look of a page, but it is not advisable
to go overboard in stuffing the page with a truckload of images. Most
net-surfers use a dial-up connection, and the average time to load a page
should be no longer than 5 seconds. If it's longer, the surfer will most
probably click away elsewhere. Yet another important point to note is
that each file on the page requires a separate HTTP request to the server.
Modern browsers offer users a choice to turn off images, which gives an
idea of how troublesome unwanted images could be. A couple of attributes
that make the pages load faster are the height and width without which
the browser must wait for the image to download since it cannot know how
much space to leave for them!
Navigability & functionality come before artistic excellence.
It is no use making the site a masterpiece of art, if users cannot navigate
around it. Even after they reach the main page, they have no clue about
where to go. Whenever the whole page is within a table, the page cannot
render (i.e., the page does not show on the screen) unless the entire
table is downloaded. There is no activity for a long time, and suddenly
the entire page is visible. To avoid this, the table can be split up into
smaller tables. Having downloaded at least some part of the page, users
can see the page header - and this prepares them for the long wait ahead,
as well as keeps them from leaving the site to go to other sites, in case
of a slow connection.
Mention must be made here of Macromedia's Shockwave Flash
plug-in, which has made its way onto most computers today, and thus presents
no harm in using vector animation. The Meta tags can make the difference
between users coming to one's site and that of the competitor's. Write
for all browsers, all resolutions, and all colour-depths. A web designer
who takes all these things into consideration and puts deep thought into
his work, would definitely be a web designer who makes a difference.
